Poseidon was god of the sea, the rivers, the springs, the drinking water, and the liquid element in general. His wife was Amphitrite, one of the 50 Nereids. He was the fifth child of Saturn and Rhea. Just like his brother Zeus, he had many extramarital relationships and therefore many children. His brothers were goddess Hestia, goddess Demeter, goddess Hera, god Hades and god Zeus.
According to mythology, Saturn, who had overthrown his father and had taken the authority from him, in fear of having the same happened to him, swallowed his children. His wife Rhea, when she gave birth to her last child, Zeus, gave Saturn a brazen stone to swallow instead of the infant, and hid Zeus in a cave on a mountain in Crete, where was raised by goat Amalthea.
As soon as Zeus reached adulthood, he liberated his other siblings from Saturn, and all together claimed power from their parents and uncles, causing Titanomachy. The three brothers received from the Cyclops the weapons that would help them in the battle between the gods. Zeus received the thunderbolt, Poseidon a trident, and Hades a helmet. After their victory, and when the three brothers divided the kingdoms they would rule, Poseidon took over the sovereignty of the seas and all the liquid elements on the earth.
The main symbol – Poseidon’s emblem is the trident, which was a scepter of recognition but also a means of imposing its will. By targeting the sea or rocks with it, he caused disasters, storms, earthquakes, drowning, volcanic eruptions, and conversely peace, tranquility and solidity.
