Demeter was the goddess of land, agriculture, food, fertility and the protector of farmers.

She was the second child of Saturn and Rhea. Demeter’s brothers were goddess Hestia, goddess Hera, god Hades, god Poseidon and god Zeus.

She had a child with Zeus, her beloved daughter Persephone. She was her weakness and Demeter was extremely protective with her. When Hades kidnapped her daughter and Demeter heard her cries, she was dressed in black and started looking for Persephone day and night. She did not eat or drink anything, not even sleep, but only looked for her daughter. The whole world fell into a heavy winter by her misery and depression, and as a result, all the plants and sprats did not germinate and all the animals were dying. Even the rest of the gods suffered from this situation. When she learned what her brother had done, furious with anger, asked Zeus’ help. So, Zeus decided that Persephone would pass 6 months close to her mother (with everything flowing) and 6 months near her husband, in the Underworld (resulting a heavy winter to the earth). And that is how Seasons were created.

Demeter’s main symbols are the wheat and fruits.
